As one of United Kingdom’s few independent rug-designer/makers I am in the unique position to create bespoke art for the floor. I take on commissions to make exclusive rugs designed around my client’s interests, personality and home.

I started my creative studies back in 1999 completing a Foundation course at the Norwich School of Art and Design, then followed my degree in Textiles Crafts BA(hons) from the University of Huddersfield where I fell in love with the craft of Rug Tufting.  In 2014 I went back to university and compleated an MA in Textile Design at Norwich University of the Arts.

Since 2006 I have been creating unique tufted works of art , specifically bespoke commisioned rugs in my studio down by the river in Colney, Norwich Norfolk, UK.

Creative story and process.

Born in Kenya to British parents, I spent my formative years in Indonesia.

“A childhood spent overseas has given me an instinct for rich colours and textures. Indonesia especially. There was always a profusion of smells sights and sounds, bright plastics against baskets, Ikat weaves contrasting against dirty concrete. All these are the genesis of my aesthetic language”

My rugs begin their life in my studio as backing clothe stretched over a large frame. I then uses a Hofmann hand tufting gun, which pushes wool through the cloth to create a thick pile. The freedom of the process allows me to literally paint with wool, giving my rugs spontaneity and fluidity.

“As a textile maker I am driven by not only the visual qualities of my work but also the tactile nature of the materials. I aim to create a stirring experience for the eyes as well as a sensual one for the feet”

Each rug is created through a relationship built between myself and the client, because as a designer/maker it is important to me that the rug sits comfortably in the environment it has been designed for. This is developed through in depth consultations, making each rug as individual as the home it is going to live in. The rugs then give you ultimate choice on what you are going to have on your floor.
